Isn't GEMA annoying? It is holding all the copyrights for all the cool songs in Germany and it won't let anyone watch them. Well, here are some ways you can stick it to The Man and watch them anyway.
The easiest way is probably hidemyass.com. You just paste the URL of the video you want to watch on the textbar and press "Hide My Ass!". The site will redirect the video content through a server outside of mother Germany thus enabling you to watch the video. If you get an error message that there are too many requests from this server you can A) Turn SSL security on by flicking the switch under the textbar from "off" to "on" or B) go under "advanced options" select another server manually. You can also do that if you want to watch country specific videos from the US, the UK, and the Netherlands. Just go to "advanced options" and manually choose a server from the desired location.
If you want to watch country specific videos from other countries you can always set up your browser to redirect all its from/to traffic to a proxy server in the desired country. This is not that easy and it may not work all the time depending on the country you are going for. In order to do that you must:
- Download and install Firefox (hotlink warning).
- Install an extension called FoxyProxy.
- Open Firefox.
- Go to Google and search for "proxy server 'x'" where "x" is the country you are trying to stream the video from. For example "proxy server greece" would be me trying to find a proxy server in Greece (unfortunately there not a lot of those around).
- Look through the results. Some good sites are xroxy.com or proxify.com.
- Here comes the hard part. In order to use a proxy server you need to know three things: Its ip, its port number and its protocol.
Here is a screenshot from xroxy where all the information you need is circled with great artistic care using MSpaint.
Copy the IP and Port number of the server that is on the top of the list.
- Open Firefox and from the menu bar go to Tools>FoxyProxy Standart>Options.
- On the right side choose "Add new proxy".
- Go to the tab "Proxy Details".
- Choose the option "Manual Proxy Configuration".
- Paste the IP on "Host or IP address" and the port number on "Port".
- If the server type is SOCKS 5 or SOCKS 4, tick SOCKS proxy and choose the appropriate version.
- Go to the "General" tab and make sure the "Enabled" option is ticked on. You may also choose a name for your proxy, otherwise it will appear with its IP address.
- Press "OK"
- Close FoxyProxy and from the menu bar go to Tools>FoxyProxy Standart and then "use 'x'" where "x" is the name or IP of your proxy.
You now browse through a proxy and hopefully you can watch your video. If you are not able to do that choose another server and try again.
Bandwidth cap.
The Wohnheim just lets you use 2.4Gb daily. I broke that cap on my second day in Regensburg. This cap will reset every midnight. But sometimes you stream stuff and most of it is gone in the middle of the day. If you want to download fairly big after that you pretty much have to wait until the other day (furthermore fucking up your allowed bandwidth) or go to the University computers and get it from there. But there is another thing you can do. The counters that keep track of your download/upload count take about 20 minutes to refresh. That in combination of the big download speeds you can achieve give you 20 minute window just before midnight to download a great deal of stuff before the counter realises you are over the cap. What you must do is start the download at 11:40 (or 11:50 to be on the safe side). You will download a lot of stuff in those 10 to 20 minutes because of the high download speed. I once almost doubled my cap.
Use this technique at your own risk though (the obvious risk is that you will not have Internet for like 20 minutes but there could be network abuses involved so do not say I did not warn you).
